Cheyney Students Work to “Get Out the Vote”

The Cheyney University NAACP College Chapter, in collaboration with the university’s Young Democrats and Young Republicans student organizations are planning Election Day activities designed to engage the campus community in the voting process.

Cheyney, PA (Syndacast) Nov 11, 2008 -- The Cheyney University NAACP Student Chapter diligently worked this year to get out the vote and register students to vote and to educate the student body on the voting process.

Voter Education Sessions – 2PM and 5PM. This Cheyney NAACP Student Chapter sponsored effort will provide educational, voter information to the campus community. These sessions will provide first-time and recently registered voters with non-partisan information on the incumbents and opponents; specifically office and party affiliation. This education session also provides the campus community with a video clip of the voting machines that are specific to their place of residence (Delaware/Chester Counties only). Finally, the educational session will inform the students of where they should prepare to go to vote, what materials they should bring and the events that will lead up to the Election Day outcome. The sessions are open to the public, and the entire campus community is encouraged to attend.

Block Party: 7:30AM – 8PM. This Election Day effort by the student-based organizations is designed to "Get Out the Vote". Collectively, many student organizations have elected to work together with the Cheyney NAACP student chapter to provide food for the outdoor grills, music and activities as a provision of services for Election Day; and because classes are cancelled in an effort to provide students with an opportunity to be fully engaged in the election process. Several faculty, staff and alumni will be on hand to support the "Election Day Cookout / Block Party" until the polls have closed. The organizations in conjunction with the faculty/staff/community volunteers who have confirmed transportation assistance to the polls will be on hand from 7:30am until the polls close; ensuring that the community is familiar with the new and current polling places.

Election Day Watch Party: 8PM-until - After the polls have closed and the campus is cleaned, the Marcus Foster Student Union (2nd floor, auditorium) will serve as the campus venue to watch the election outcomes as a community. Faculty/Staff/Alumni will be on hand to foster intellectual conversation about this historical event.

Visitor parking is available in the Marcus Foster Student Union parking lot.
